 The development of dental caries is linked to the presence of certain caries-promoting bacteria which breakdown sugars in the mouth. While milk is the best source of calcium and is essential for growth in children, the prolonged presence of milk and milk sugar (lactose) in the mouth is a frequent cause of dental decay in children. Dental surgeons have tried to reduce the risk of developing tooth decay by modifying the bacteria in the mouth. GG probiotic can colonise the mouth and actively binds to saliva-coated surfaces. By establishing itself in the biofilm of the mouth, the caries-promoting bacteria in the mouth are displaced by LACTOGG®’s probiotic strain. A group of dentists and child specialists embarked on a clinical trial involving nearly 600 children aged between 1 and 6 years to test if putting GG probiotic in the children’s milk could reduce the development of dental caries. At the end of the 7 month clinical trial the researchers recorded less dental decay in those children who received milk containing this probiotic. Besides regular brushing and avoidance of sweet foods and drinks, consumption of LACTOGG® may play a role in reducing the risk of tooth decay, especially among milk-drinkers.
